Slug Friend Art

Hello,

I thought it would be fun to share some of the creative process and the inspiration behind this adorable design.

Q: What inspired the Slug Friend design?

A: The biggest inspiration for this design was Charlie, the shop cat, and her fascination with slugs. She likes to watch them, talk to them, and even try to play with them. (Don't worry, she can't touch them.) Also, I have always had a bit of a fascination with slugs and wanted to hold them as a child.

Q: Why the name slug friend?

A: I picked the name slug friend because that is what we call the slugs for Charlie. She is good at word association/recognition.

Q: What are some of the options for this design?

A: 3-inch vinyl sticker, 3-inch textured sticker, slug friend sticker bundle, 11oz mug, and 12oz mug.

Q: What mediums were used in the creation of this art?

A: The mediums used for this art were:

• Colored pencils
• Alcohol art markers
• Acrylic paint markers 

Q: Why a textured slug sticker?

A: I picked slug friend for my first textured sticker because it allows you to take slug friend with you. Also, I thought it would be fun to touch a slug without the slime. Textured stickers are good for calming and focus. During the creative process for this artwork, I looked at photos of real slugs, even though I went with a cartoon style and looked up slug facts. 

Here are some of the slug facts I found while working on this art:

• Slugs are good at cleaning up and composting. They will eat dead vegetation, excrement, and carcasses.
• Slugs help with the distribution of mushroom and fern spores and, on rare occasions, can help pollinate flowers.
•  Some slug species can live up to 5 years 
• Slugs have individual scent trails so they can find their way home.
• The largest slug is the ash-black slug that can grow to 30cm or about 12 inches. 
• Slug slime absorbs water to help keep slugs hydrated. That's why it is hard to wash off. 
• A group or gathering of slugs is called a Cornucopia
• They use their upper tentacles for sight and smell and the lower ones for taste and touch.
• Slugs have 27,000 teeth
